Street Fighter 2 contains some of the best music ever composed for a video game. For anyone that has never played SF2, or that has only played the later version of the series (such as Street Fighter: Alpha or Capcom Vs. SNK) you will have missed out on a great piece of gaming history. Despite the SNES console (which the game was first released on) having a fairly basic audio output (compared to today's CD quality that we are used to), Capcom still managed to make the game's songs sound full and exciting, which is a great achievement when you compare the music to that of some of the other games being released around the same time.
I was at home the other day when my friend sent me a compilation of Street Fighter 2 music from the original SNES game. I couldn't believe that I knew nearly every one of the songs that he sent me, and the memories started rushing back. Each stage is paired to each character (for example, Guile has the American Airforce base as his level, and Blanka has the Brazilian fishing community as his level) based on the character's nationality and style. Each character has their own 'home level', and the music of each level is reflected by that.
Of all the Street Fighter 2 music from the game, my favourite two songs are the ones on Ken's stage and on Guile's stage. Hearing the music for Ken's level made me feel like a little kid again - when I used to get so excited about playing Street Fighter 2.
Street Fighter 2 music is now part of video gaming folklore, and not only did Capcom produce one of the most successful, balanced and fun beat 'em up games ever, but they also produced one of the best soundtracks ever.
