The original PSone dualshock controller was practically revolutionary when it was first introduced. The series, 1, 2 and 3, have never offered anything particularly new or unique, but they've all managed to package great functionality into a good package, and the DualShock 3 continues the delightful trend.

The good? Same familiar feel and layout that most everyone can hold comfortably, same pressure sensitive (analog input) buttons across the board, same rumble package. New here are separated L2 and R2 trigger buttons that easily allow for progressive input, which I find especially great in racing games. Wireless connection is via Bluetooth, with a rechargeable onboard battery. Sony added it's in-house 'SIXAXIS' controls, which is something of a cousin to a Wii controller. The battery life is quite surprisingly good, giving me at least 12 hours of any game with full and frequent rumble. It's also nearly indestructible and refuses to die-- I've bought additional units, but my original that was packaged in with the PS3 well over 2 years ago is still 100% reliable and functional.

More on the 'SIXAXIS' feature... it's not particularly meant to track movement (this is the territory of the Playstation Move add-on), but rather to be used as a floating motion sensor. Few games support it, but those that do (Heavy Rain does it very well) include down or upward snaps as actions, a tilting camera view based on your tilting, and generally natural-feeling motions that would otherwise be done with the hand such as opening a sliding door, twisting a key in a lock, etc. ...Honestly, it's hit-or-miss and doesn't really add much value to the device, but since you're not particularly paying any extra for it, there's no harm in it being available.

The bad? Ergonomics could use an upgrade, to be honest. For particular hand sizes/shapes extended use will give stiff fingers, and any kind of extended use with a very firm hold (in my case, running into this while concentrating my hardest to push in the racers Gran Tourismo and F1 2010) may well end in some pain on finger bones. This "should" lower my review score, but I freely confess this is my own problem that I could correct by better controlling my grip or taking more small breaks. 95%+ of users will never run into this, and it is preventable. I can't fault Sony for not making the device comfortable to play with for an indefinite length of continuous play!

More than anything, I'm shocked how incredibly light the thing is and feels almost weightless when held firmly. I have no clue how Sony managed to pack in all it offers, especially the battery life. The bluetooth connection means third party controllers will probably never happen (or be any less expensive), but thankfully Sony doesn't leave the window open for anyone else to ever offer additional features or alternate designs that would work any better. It's rare that your only choice isn't at all painful to be stuck with. Thumbs up all around.

In this video, I review the wireless keypad for the Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) console. This wireless keypad attaches to the PS3 Six Axis controller and is available for sale today for $49.99 USD. The device has a USB connector at the top which is used to charge it. It has its own battery which isn't replaceable much like the Six Axis controller. Thankfully, it has it's own power switch to turn the keypad on and off manually. It has buttons for the Select, Start, and Playstations buttons which work with your existing controller. Along the top of the device are two meta buttons, one blue, and one orange. To type the orange and blue keys on the keypad, one would have to use the each respective meta key. Shift is not used for these characters and is only used for capitalization. As for comfort, I couldn't type very well until I figured out that I needed to slide my thumbs up from the normal position. Once I did that, I was able to type fairly easily. A great feature of the wireless pad which I have not seen before, is that the entire keypad acts as a trackpad! To turn this on, there's a toggle button along the bottom which looks like a finger. The sensitivity of the trackpad is not great (given it's design, it's understandable), but it is usable for couch surfing and basic tasks. Also along the bottom are two more keys: A message box button and a friends list shortcut. If you have a PS3, and send messages to your friends, this is a good investment. It's also good for ...

This is a great controller, I'm going to start with the good things and the bad things
the good things: it has sweet LED lights, it has 2 rumble pads (it vibrates), the controller feels so natural in my hands, you can enable turbo fire by pressing any button and then pressing the button on top of the PS button,
the bad things: there is only one bad thing that is a big yet a small problem, the dead zone, for you who do not know what a dead zone is, it is the amount of space you can move an analog stick before it will respond. The dead zone is huge on the controller and if you are used to the original PS3 controller then it will take a week or two to get used to.And one more thing, if you press the PS button it wont turn on the PS3.

HOW TO USE: it will come with a usb thing (sorry i dont know what its called), you get the usb and stick it into your PS3, and press connect until the light flickers really fast then press the controller's Ps button until it flickers really fast and it will connect,
if you already had it connected and turned your PS3 off, when you turn it on , just turn the button behind the controller to 'ON' and then it should automatically turn on

I hope you decide to buy thing controller AS IT IS AWESOME, great for first person shooters, like call of duty

I picked this controller up today and am pleased. Moves are easier to pull off, it's lightweight and the response time seems to be better than the standard PS3 controller. The only reasons I don't give 5 stars are because:

1.) It's only for fighting games. Any game that uses an analog stick won't be compatible with this pad. For I'd like it to function for all my games and not have to switch it out when I play Madden or Batman.
2.) The select and start buttons aren't elevated above the rest of the controller so it's harder to find them without looking at the pad. This is probably something I'll get used to, but I don't like it right now.


Edit 1. So there's this little switch at the bottom of the controller that allows the directional pad to function as either the regular Dpad OR the right or left analog stick. This should allow the controller to be used for at least a few more games but still not for games that utilize both analog sticks or the Dpad and sticks simultaneously.
