God of War III: Ultimate Edition

God of War III: Ultimate Edition Review

Every God of War game that has been released since the first in 2005 has been incredible. Amazingly enough, they even got the mobile game right! And despite this being the final core chapter of Kratos' quest to murder the gods and take down Olympus brick by brick, there are still more games to come. So how does this one stack up versus the rest of them?

Every person is going to have their own opinions as to which is the best game but in my eyes this is the best. You can pick it up, having known nothing of the earlier games, and still get the full experience. There is even a slight nod to Chains of Olympus and because of the nature of this nod, I would strongly recommend picking that game up first if you intend to play it. That said, though, it still can be picked up by almost anyone and the player can be sucked in. The back story is explained as you go and many things that happened in the earlier games come back and deeply affect the story of this game.

Many have, and will, cry out about how this game doesn't bring anything new to the table. At it's core, no it doesn't, but it not only refines it for a faster, smoother, and much more well-rounded playthrough. Sure three out of the four weapons are nearly the same, but they're different enough that you can still use them in different scenarios to better (or worse) effect. And even beyond that, the gameplay of the other games was darn near perfect and people knew it. Why else would you be seeing so many clones starting to pop up on the market? So with that in mind, why try fixing what isn't already broken? The gameplay is smoother, even in situations that take up a lot of performance power and the weapon/magic upgrades are a lot faster. No more sitting bored to tears while waiting for your meter to fill.

And speaking of areas that take up a lot of power: this is not a game that should be viewed on a standard TV. You will miss so much in doing so it would be almost criminal not to play it on an HDTV. Right off the bat you begin by climbing Mount Olympus and are engaged in battle with Poseidon and his Leviathan beast. Your jaw may just about fall out when you witness this fight, I know mine wanted to. The sheer level of detail and depth in this game is staggering and will leave you awestruck and breathless. If you enjoyed the brutal methods of killing in the previous games, just wait until you see this one. This is not a game for kids, at all, but the greater amount of horsepower in this system has given rise to probably some of the most visceral displays of violence in modern media. Yes the fight with Poseidon is amazing to watch, but you'll likely be wide-eyed thinking "I can't believe he's doing that" when you, yes you, are killing him.

All in all, the game, though short, is a truly incredible gaming experience and definitely comes as essential for all mature gamers. The amount of trophies and little extras make the game well worth revisiting.

But how does the Ultimate Edition compare to the standard? Well, first there's the price difference. You get the following:

- The God of War III game
- A special alternate costume for once you beat the game
- A special documentary about the making of the game (standard and high definition)
- The God of War Blood and Metal EP (a value on iTunes or Amazon MP3)
- The God of War Trilogy Soundtrack
- A special unlockable arena
- Art Book
- Pandora's Box Replica

Is it worth the more? (Yes I realize it's more now that it's a collector's item of sorts) To me it was, as I like the Pandora's Box replica, the art book, and the soundtracks, and I will likely watch the documentary and get lots more play time out of the game with the alternate costume and arena. Some won't get the same experience as me, a future art major, from the art book, or the soundtrack because, let's face it, how many people regularly listen to movie scores? .00001% of the American populous? Sounds about right. If you don't listen to those, chances are you won't listen to this regularly. I don't, but I do enjoy listening to it from time to time and likely will even more come school, as I do enjoy listening to scored music when doing schoolwork.

Thus, it works for me, but even then, the box itself is rather empty. You open Pandora's Box and there's just a little art book (it's smaller than you might think and only has a small fraction of the concept art pieces in it) and the game under the secret board thing. The space under here can also fit the God of War Collection, seeing as it's also the same model Pandora's Box as the one included in the Trilogy edition internationally. The rest of the bonuses are included as codes in a little booklet of scratch-offs inside the game case.

When all's said and done, though, whether you chose to get the standard version, you're still getting one of the most breathtaking experiences in modern gaming. This is, to me, at least, one of the greatest games I have ever had the pleasure of playing. If you are mature enough to handle the extreme levels of first person violence and hands-on sex in this game, then you're in for one hell of a wild ride.

I was very gratefull that Visceral Games and Electronic Arts created a game similar in style to the God of War series. Don't understand why people complain about that, after all there are so few titles in this genre. In my opinion God of War III is the greatest game ever created. This game could have been closer to GOW in my eyes except for a few minor details. First the difficulty levels are way off skelter. I believe it is the hellish difficulty level, where if you get hit twice by most enemies you are already dead, I can't imagine what the Inferno difficulty is like. It doesn't change after Dante is fully upgraded either(full health, magic, abilities, etc.). This pretty much kills the replayabiity, because it makes the game way too frustrating. Second problem is the lack of variety of enemies, and the enemies themselves. A few of the enemies were more annoying than enjoyable to fight. The fat gluttony monsters were pretty much just a waste. On a good note the ability upgrades and magic upgrades were excellent. The cross weapon is also very enjoyable to use(actually way better than the bow and arrow in God of War). The relics system although creative, probably not necessary(God of War does fine with out it). Story was excellent, level design very artistic, and the controls were spot on(very similar to GOW).
What the developers can do to improve this game for the sequel:
1.) increase the length of the game.
2.) add a variety of enemies
3.) possibly add a third or a fourth weapon
4.) fix the difficulty levels
5.) get rid of the relic system
6.) add that St. Lucie character as a playable character to the game
Well I can't think of anything else. Overall I would recommend purchasing this game. If any developers or publishers are reading this please make more games like Dante's Inferno and God of War III. Darksiders(played the demo, sucks!!) and Ninja Gaiden don't count they are not the same style of games.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion: Game of the Year Edition Review

I bought Oblivion as one of the first games for my PS3, and I have played it many, many times more than any of the (many) other games I've also bought for it (as well as got the PC version). I'm not sure if it's a fair statement to say it's one of the best games ever made, but it certainly is one of the best-extended play games ever made. You can spend oodles and oodles of time on this game, only to come back and spend more some other time (don't ask how I know this :P). Furthermore, much of the game is open-ended, so you can decide what you want to do. Will you be a ruthless assassin, a cunning thief, a skilled mage, a powerful fighter, or a rogue bandit or adventurer? Even after you complete the main quest (more on this later), you can continue with the other quests and continue to play; the game ends when you shut the machine off (or fail the main quest). Also, there are so many options for every quest that you'll likely find yourself with multiple characters to try out the various possibilities; and, even if that didn't appeal to you, you'll probably want to experiment with the various skill sets and races.
The gameplay is solid first/third person action. You use medieval weaponry, can ride horses (but not fight while mounted), explore a huge map and find hidden caves, mines, etc., fight mythic monsters and demigods, interact with NPC's in a fairly wide range of ways, etc. There are a few bugs, but not too many - and, if you get this for the PC, you can get all of the patches (otherwise, you have to use a work-around). For console players, this game is very easy to control (I prefer the PS3 controls to PC controls, although you have quite a few more options with the PC version), which, compared to some other console games, is a great relief. For gameplay, I would rate this 3 to 4 stars. For addictiveness and fun, I would rate it 5.
The graphics are probably a 4; there are some major problems with realism in some areas, but the world is so gorgeous, and the customizable characters so visually interesting, that for visual appeal (rather than necessarily technical perfection), I give it a 4.
As far as actual storyline and storyline of the major and minor quests, I would rate this game about 3 stars; there is nothing terribly original or unique about it, and it is often predictable. There are moments of great cleverness and wit, and occasional touches of brilliance. The problem - which is, in other respects, a great feature - is that there is simply so much; since the majority is mediocre, though, the great is sort of lost in the fray.
After a very lucky encounter with the Emperor (lucky, because it gets you out of prison), the player sets off on a quest to stop the assassins who murdered the royal family and find the lost heir to the throne. You discover a daedric prince and his minions behind it all, and you must lead the heir to victory. Many of the tasks along the way (particularly in the middle, where it starts to feel like "filler") are very mundane and tiresome, but most are fun. You traverse the empire, finding pieces of the puzzle, uncovering mysteries, felling baddies, enlisting aid, etc., until at last the empire is safe. It's not a stellar story-line, but it's solid and interesting enough, and ends in a cool way - leaving the door open for an interesting part 5.
I would rate the various major sub-quests (the guild related ones) between 2 and 4. The thieves guild would be a 3 or 4, as would the Dark Brotherhood, while the mages' and fighter's guild quests would be 2's or 3's. Perhaps it's the appeal of sneaking about and being mischievous - and staying alive while doing it; or maybe it's the monotonous beginning of the mages' and fighter's guild (run-around quests, like killing rats and collecting mushrooms; doing "chores" for the various guilds, etc.); but, however that may be, they are good quests, but not my favorite. They earned a lower rating not really for storyline (they're all moderately interesting and about the same as far as originality goes), but for appeal. As far as the stories themselves: for the Mages' Guild, you must defeat the a powerful necromancer and assume leadership of the Mages' Guild; for the Thieves' Guild, you must remove the curse of the Gray Fox and assume leadership of the guild; for the Fighter's Guild, you must discover the (terrible) source of power of a rival group, and destroy it; for the Dark Brotherhood, you must uncover a traitor and assume leadership of the group.
As far as the the add-on packs (Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine); they're about the same, rating wise, with their own hosts of pluses and minuses, but they add so much to the "world" that they are well worth playing at least once.
Despite some of the lower individual ratings, I think overall this game is 5/5 because of its sheer enjoyability. It isn't perfect, but it's very good and exceptionally fun; and that's all that's needed imho. :-)

This is a great game, but paying the extra + dollars for the limited edition is not worth it. I only got the limited edition when it was sold on Amazon on sale for .99.

The limited edition is essentially the regular version plus an extra Blu-Ray disc. This bonus disc has a "soundtrack", making of videos, art gallery, and a snippet of a help guide.

The "soundtrack" was disappointing since you can't play it from a CD player or transfer to an MP3 player. What's worse is that they are more like 2 minute background music loops. Nothing special there.

Some of the bonus videos could have been found on the UbiSoft website.

Art galleries are nice but a paper book would have been better.

The hint guide is more of an ad/preview for the printed version. And since this game is so short... do you really need it? It's also hard to read the hint guide text on the screen unless you have a really big TV screen. I'm guessing that the pages of the printed guide were just saved as JPEG's and not specially formatted for the screen.

I'd give the game itself 4 stars.

Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition

First off, the gold is nice looking I guess, but I wish it was the same cover as the Japanese version and shipped as the original game in the first place.

The cover is better in full cover, and it's kind of BS to re-release the game with the much superior DLC and then essential "Mercenaries Mode" and ask people to buy it again. As its own game the so-called "gold Box" is a nice little package with a lot of content you'd EXPECT from an RE game (some of which was absent initially and made into DLC) and a worthy purchase for RE fans.

I digress; I picked up this game for cheap when Game Crazy Liquidated (R.I.P.) and was hesitant... My initial experience with RE5 wasn't the best. I rented it ( i say rented but what I really did was buy it used from Gamestop and then return it within 7 days cause you know, screw them) and my friend did the same.
I'm a long time RE fan with fond memories of RE1 on the PS1, he owed a N64 back then.

The game was fun for a little while with a friend, because you can coordinate attacks, etc: "you stand here I'll shoot the barrel". But he lost interest half way through because the story this time around isn't as good as in the past... and left with only an AI driven Shiva, I just called it quits.

There's no coordinating with AI Shiva, and, she's dumb and a poor shot. At times I withheld ammo from her on purpose. To make matters worse the whole "ownership of items" issue in RE5 due to potential to play with a real person is abysmal. When my friend left he took all "his" weapons" and all I had for Shiva was sniper-rifle, which she proceeded to shoot at enemies 3 feet away?

As dumb as Shiva is, I guess as a means of realism, Chris is even DUMBER! I guess all those roids took their toll (though he was never a brain-trust) but man is it irritating to play with a comp, and playing with a random person feels weird, and doesn't work well in terms of them "jumping in" (they have to wait for a checkpoint, or I can restart, hooray)

So as I said, I never finished the game, and then I got this one, but the save files used to be locked, so all my progress? Lost. They released a patch but my PS3 got YLOD before that so when I backed-up my hard-drive, those files were omitted, thanks Capcom!

The save file thing and the aforementioned weapon ownership silliness is representative of an irritating attitude Dev's have about their games this gen... Why lock save files? And who cares it an advanced player can share endgame guns with someone else (which they can't in RE5) I mean it's our foretime we choose to spend playing your game, what is the harm, remember back when games had cheat codes? It's supposed to be recreation not an Olympic event, jeez! This is the drawback to "trophies" but these people are taking those a little too seriously if you ask me.

Once again I digress, I got this to play the DLC, so I had to rebeat the main game, and with the right motivation it was somewhat enjoyable, especially when I got to the new stuff. But no puzzles or really anything other than shooting zombies faces off was a disappointment for the main game but it did that well I suppose, You won't hear any complaints out of me about the controls, they work for the game, end of story, you want gears of war or uncharted? Go play them instead.


The DLC which I finally unlocked... great stuff! Puzzles, like more than one, and Jill is back (although a little fuglier than her RE3 role) and most importantly the game is fun to play on your own in the DLC where the main game is clearly only meant for two actual people, who know each other by their real names. The competitive mode is a lark for a bit. It would have been nice if they also included the 2 dollar theme off PSN as part of the Gold Box.

The Mercenaries mode is of course great just as it was in RE4. I would give the 2 DLC packs a 4-5 for game play and I consider all the other stuff (which hI reiterated was NOT IN THE ORIGINAL
The DLC is like 3 hours total if you don't rush, but then again so was RE1 back in the day. And its not as if the Main game doesn't have its moments. It does, it just has, other moments.

Overall, if you're a RE fan and you don't already own this game this is a good purchase even at $ 46. If you haven't played the main game yet you might genuinely enjoy your first time through, and if you have a friend who is also interested, then you win! The DLC is great, both of `em, the mansion is still a great setting. Mercenaries is back in this edition, why it was absent in the original is beyond me.
If you owe RE5 still,... that sucks, but sell it I guess and get this. You could buy the stuff of the PSN but I personally hate not having the content on a disc and in this version (unlike the 360 version, FYI) this all there. Having two PS3's ignite with the YLOD makes you appreciative of what you can physically own.

If you just want at shoot `em up which you can play with a friend there are many, many better options. But this time around this is a worthy Resident Evil for fans of the series!

Previously only seen during cut scenes of the original RESIDENT EVIL 5, the first new episode titled “LOST IN NIGHTMARES”, finds BSAA agent, Chris Redfield, working with his partner, Jill Valentine, as they investigate Ozwell E.
