DualShock 3 Wireless Controller - Red

DualShock 3 Wireless Controller - Red Review

The original PSone dualshock controller was practically revolutionary when it was first introduced. The series, 1, 2 and 3, have never offered anything particularly new or unique, but they've all managed to package great functionality into a good package, and the DualShock 3 continues the delightful trend.

The good? Same familiar feel and layout that most everyone can hold comfortably, same pressure sensitive (analog input) buttons across the board, same rumble package. New here are separated L2 and R2 trigger buttons that easily allow for progressive input, which I find especially great in racing games. Wireless connection is via Bluetooth, with a rechargeable onboard battery. Sony added it's in-house 'SIXAXIS' controls, which is something of a cousin to a Wii controller. The battery life is quite surprisingly good, giving me at least 12 hours of any game with full and frequent rumble. It's also nearly indestructible and refuses to die-- I've bought additional units, but my original that was packaged in with the PS3 well over 2 years ago is still 100% reliable and functional.

More on the 'SIXAXIS' feature... it's not particularly meant to track movement (this is the territory of the Playstation Move add-on), but rather to be used as a floating motion sensor. Few games support it, but those that do (Heavy Rain does it very well) include down or upward snaps as actions, a tilting camera view based on your tilting, and generally natural-feeling motions that would otherwise be done with the hand such as opening a sliding door, twisting a key in a lock, etc. ...Honestly, it's hit-or-miss and doesn't really add much value to the device, but since you're not particularly paying any extra for it, there's no harm in it being available.

The bad? Ergonomics could use an upgrade, to be honest. For particular hand sizes/shapes extended use will give stiff fingers, and any kind of extended use with a very firm hold (in my case, running into this while concentrating my hardest to push in the racers Gran Tourismo and F1 2010) may well end in some pain on finger bones. This "should" lower my review score, but I freely confess this is my own problem that I could correct by better controlling my grip or taking more small breaks. 95%+ of users will never run into this, and it is preventable. I can't fault Sony for not making the device comfortable to play with for an indefinite length of continuous play!

More than anything, I'm shocked how incredibly light the thing is and feels almost weightless when held firmly. I have no clue how Sony managed to pack in all it offers, especially the battery life. The bluetooth connection means third party controllers will probably never happen (or be any less expensive), but thankfully Sony doesn't leave the window open for anyone else to ever offer additional features or alternate designs that would work any better. It's rare that your only choice isn't at all painful to be stuck with. Thumbs up all around.

Modern Royal Jewellery - Elizabeth II, Queen of England

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Queen Elizabeth II has so much jewellery that she has a special room to keep it in about the size of an ice rink, situated in the basement of Buckingham Palace. Valued in the region of £30 million, much of this collection has been given as gifts to the queen, at the time of her engagement, marriage and then on royal visits.

The queen although famed for her modesty in her daily dress, preferring tweeds and scarves, is a glamorous figure when dressed in her finery for a State occasion and it is then that she enjoys wearing some of her most beautiful and cherished pieces.

One of the highlights of her collection is the 'Timur Ruby'. This fabulous stone, fashioned into a necklace is actually a spinel, weighing an extraordinary 352.50 carats. In 1739 when it was seized by the then Shah of Persia when he invaded India. It was then taken back to England by the East India company, and is most famous for its inscriptions, each of its previous owners have inscribed it, the first being 1612 AD, although it is thought that it had some three of four owners previous to this date.

Amongst other favourites of Her Majesty are some fantastic sets of emeralds. set in gold and surrounded by diamonds these are presented in the form of earrings, and matching necklace and diadem.

Much of the Queen's jewellery has been handed down to her, particular among her favourites is a large sapphire given to Queen Victoria by Prince Albert before their wedding, and Queen Mary's large ruby earrings, and v-shaped ruby and diamond bandeau collar which the Queen models on the front cover of the publication 'The Jewels of Queen Elizabeth' by Leslie Field.

Of course diamonds feature heavily in the Queen's collection. The largest diamond ever found is called the Cullinan diamond, named after Sir Thomas Cullinan. The stone, was presented to King Edward V11, and was cut into large parts, eventually becoming eleven large gem quality stones. Two of the largest are now in the crown jewels, and two, known as the Cullinan III, and IV, belong to our present Queen. She amusingly refers to these unrivalled stones as 'Granny's chips', as they were passed to her as an heirloom and will be in turn passed on to the next queen, to be worn with pleasure but saved for the nation.

Wii Troubleshooting - Unable to Read Disk

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If you are like me then you have probably had the following happen. You await eagerly for the next big smash hit Wii game to be released. You ring your Video store to reserve a copy, you go to work, after work you drive to your video store like a man on a mission, get that beloved game, drive home barely keeping to the speed limit, grab your Wii, plug it in, insert your game and you get "Game could not be read." Is there anything more frustrating than that? I don't think so! Hopefully in this article I can show you what you can do to lessen the chance of this happening to you.

Firstly there are several reasons while this "unable to read disk" message applies ranging from incorrect handling of the DVD to improper loading of the game disk; your DVD drive could also be faulty. The good thing about Wii troubleshooting the unable to read disk problem is not that difficult.

You will want to make sure that your disk is being loaded properly. If your Wii console is positioned in the vertical position then you should have the label on the Wii disk facing to the right. If however you have a horizontally positioned console then the label of course should be facing upwards.

If the game is being loaded properly but the unable to read disk problem still applies then you will want to inspect the game disk itself. If there are any scratches on the disk then this can be the problem. You will want to get a micro fiber clothe or similar and give the disk a wipe, the same goes if there are dirty fingerprints or similar on the disk. Make sure that you wipe from the center of the disk outwards, never wipe round and round.

If the problem still persists then you may need to get a DVD lens cleaner and give your console the once over with that. These can easily be picked up at your local video store for around $5.00.

While there are a few more common Wii troubleshooting problems with regards to "unable to read disk" these are the more common solutions.

PS3 Resident Evil Controller Faceplate and Skinz - Characters

PS3 Resident Evil Controller Faceplate and Skinz - Characters Review

It's pretty tricky to put on without getting air bubbles trapped in. I was lucky to have a small squeegee in the house as that helped a lot. One problem with the skin though is the fact that it's folded in the packaging it comes in so there's a big wrinkle in the middle of the big skin pieces, although it does kind of pull off a nice pattern and style but if you want it smooth then it will put a damper on that plan. As for the controller plate, it's pretty neat but makes it harder to press the buttons, especially if you need to press two at the same time.

Nintendo Wii Vs PlayStation 3 - A Genuine Combat

Image : http://www.flickr.com

Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3 are the top-notch gaming consoles commanding the market. However, knowing the difference of Nintendo Wii Vs PlayStation 3 gives clarity about each gaming console and its features.

Hardware - Nintendo Wii has a 729 MHz broadway processor with system memory of 88 MB memory, while the internal flash memory is 512 MB. This system outputs video in 480p definition, but the gamers need to purchase SD cards for surplus storage. The hardware is less powerful and hence is less priced, but the motion controller has made the system eminent from its competitors. PlayStation 3 has a multi-core cell processor as the main CPU. The internal memory is 512 MB and this is divided between the graphics engine and the system equally. The new version of PS3 is slim and has an internal hard drive of 120 GB. This system can output video in high definition.

Features - Nintendo Wii is prominent for it motion controller feature as this feature allows the gamers to have a perfect control over the game and its movements than pressing buttons. PS3 has controllers with simple tilt sensors, and the control range is not identical to the Wii remote. The huge library of games and its remote has increased the demand of this game console. PlayStation 3 has built-in Bluetooth and offers the ability to play Blu-Rays and DVDs. PS3 has more horsepower and graphics than Wii to make it more attractive. Nintendo Wii allows playing GameCube games, while PS3 slim cannot play PlayStation 2 and can allow its gamers to play only games for PlayStation 3 model. However, both the systems are featured with WiFi support.

Games - Rock Band, Madden NFL and Lego Star Wars are released in both gaming systems, but the Wii versions have simple graphics and very few features owing to the less powerful CPU. PS3 has exclusive games such as Metal Gear Solid IV, Killzone 2, Uncharted and LittleBigPlanet, and the Wii games that are exclusive include Super Mario Galaxy, Wii Sports, No More Heroes and Metroid Prime 3. However, Wii games are casual and family friendly, while PlayStation 3 games aim for hardcore gaming audience.

Online - Nintendo Wii has online service that facilitates the gamers to access the virtual console and also facilitates them in purchasing as well as downloading the classic console games that includes Sonic the Hedgehog and Super Mario Bros. Wii gamers can enjoy their games to the core by exchanging their friend codes that have 12 digit numbers, but each console has a unique number. PlayStation 3 allows the gamers to access a free online service, the PlayStation network, so that the players can play online as well as purchase movies or games and as well download them to their hard drives.

Price - Nintendo Wii is considered to be a value console as it is available at $259.99 and this price tag is significantly lesser than PlayStation 3 that costs $599.99. However, recently, PS3 slim is available at $299.99 and the gap between the two gaming consoles has narrowed.

Burn PS3 Games - Download And Play Today

Image : http://www.flickr.com

If your hobby is playing video games then you have most likely tried to burn ps3 games. Everyone wants to get the new games and play them and beat them. This is all great except for the cost. PS3 games are getting so expensive that it is hard to justify paying for them when you go and beat the game in 3 or 4 days. You probably feel like you were ripped off.

There is a better way to download and burn ps3 games. What you have to do is some research. I have tried coutnless ps3 game download sites only to be disappointed time and time again. I would get to the site, choose my game, and then start downloading only to find that it was going to take 6 to 8 hours for the download to finish. Not to mention that once it was done downloading I had no idea how to burn ps3 games.

What I soon discovered is that there are download sites that show you exactly how to download and burn games. These sites are incredible because of the amount of games available and the excellent support that you will get. You also will be shown the steps to take to ensure a successful download. You can download free games pretty easily.

Now, downloading games has become a great hobby. Instead of spending $120 on two games, I didn't have to spend a dime. There are so many ways to download games but check this download site out as it is the best I have found out of hundreds of sites.

Psycho Movie Review

"Psycho" can quite rightly be called the grand-daddy of modern horror films, and yet manages to trounce all that came after it. You'd be hard pressed to call any film perfect, and save one scene towards the end, this film is as close to perfect as you can get. It's incredibly suspenseful, deeply disturbing, intellectual and defies convention by managing to kill off the main character a third of the way in to the film. Arguably, this is Hitchcock's best film, simply due to its ability to go between simplicity of story and complex intellectual detail on the other. It's a film that doesn't rely on gore but gives the suggestion of it, making the film far scarier and shocking. This is a film that will draw you in and leave you waiting on what comes next.

The plot of "Psycho" can be somewhat deceiving when you first start to watch it; we are introduced to Marion Crane, a woman who runs off with $40,000 of her boss' money in a spur of the moment act that sees her drive off in to the country to start a seemingly new life. Along the way she is consumed by guilt and becomes increasingly afraid that she will be caught out. A truly scary scene comes when a policeman pulls her over and stands imposing over her car, demanding to know why she decided to stop on the side of the road to sleep in her car. At this point, you're thinking the policeman is the evil killer about to pounce, especially as he starts following her as she continues her journey. To shake the policeman, she eventually stops at the "Bates" Motel, and we are then introduced to Norman Bates, the seemingly shy motel operator who checks her in for the night. They eventually talk, and it turns out Bates is living alone with his demented old mother who needs his constant care. Later that night, in one of cinema's most famous scenes, Marion is knifed to death as she is taking a shower in a terrifying scene where the only hint of the killer appears to be the outline of an older woman. When Bates discovers her dead body, he recoils in horror and proceeds to cover up all evidence of the crime, believing his mother actually did it in a fit of jealously. What is truly amazing from a story telling point of view about this turn of events is that as an audience we've invested so much time in to Marion that it comes as a complete shock when she's killed, and all of a sudden we have a new protagonist in Norman Bates and we start to follow his journey. There is enough twists and turns to keep you on the edge of your seat and an ending that you don't really see coming until you see it. It's obvious that Hitchcock must have read up on Freud and psychology to explain the motivations of the killer, and bearing in mind that it was 1960 this film was initially released, a lot of what was in this film would have been fairly new and shocking to people watching it.

Arguably, the best scene in the film is the death of the private investigator. Out of all the shocks in this film, the tension is built up so well that in the end when the shock comes, it almost feels like its come out of left field and will literally have you jumping out of your seat, and of course, chilled. There have been so many horror films since Psycho that have featured killings but I would suggest that there really aren't many that can come close to matching the ones portrayed in this film, largely because later horror films have relied on gore rather than suspense, and 'Psycho' also has the added benefit of an intellectual reasoning behind what's going on. It also has a more general appeal, where as most films in the horror genre have a limited appeal.

The only downside to this film, and possibly an example of what was needed at that time, is one scene at the end when a psychologist explains exactly why everything happened the way it did. Perhaps looking back at it from today it's far simpler to see what was happening rather than having someone explain it to you. It's not really necessary, but again, at the time this may have been more new to a general audience and perhaps Hitchcock needed it in there to help the audience along with this truly disturbing story.

Perhaps the most chilling moment is the final scene in the film where we see Norman Bates sitting solemnly in his chair, but we hear the voice of his evil mother. Even almost 50 years later, this scene will send a chill down your spine as you realise how deeply disturbed Bates is. It's all very simple, quiet and a fantastic piece of acting by Anthony Perkins, especially the final shot where he glances up at you and smiles.

Probably the best horror film you'll see. It's dated but still incredibly effective and chilling.

PlayStation 3 Slim Review - Is the PlayStation 3 Slim the Best Game Console?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

The PlayStation 3 has been around for many years now, but now it has been slimmed down and revamped and certainly doesn't disappoint. First and foremost, the PS3 Slim is cheaper. It's also a third smaller and lighter than the hulking previous version, and a third more energy efficient, meaning slightly lower running costs and, more importantly, near silent operation as minimal fan work is required to keep it cool.

The Slim has gained a 120GB hard drive and exchanged the fingerprint magnet gloss finish for a matte one. The ugly font is gone to, replaced by a new, embossed PS3 logo on both top and bottom.

Furthermore, Sony has dropped the touch sensitive power and eject sensors, ending the frustration of waving your finger to no avail. Instead there are proper, old-fashioned buttons with an agreeably clicky action. The on/off switch on the back has also gone, so you'll need to switch it off at the socket.

There are some cool new ways of controlling the PS3 Slim. Plug it into a Bravia Link-capable Sony TV and you can navigate the PlayStation's media bar menu with the TV's remote, making it ideal for watching Blu-ray's. It even powers down the PlayStation when you switch the TV off.

If you are out and about, you can still get out all your PS3's movies, pictures and music using your PSP, but you'll also be able to access it from certain Sony Ericsson phones.

There is one major gripe with the new PS3. It won't play PS2 games, although some PSOne titles will work. There are also a litany of minor caveats. It only has two USB's, is no longer compatible with Linux, doesn't come with an HDMI cable and you'll have to shell out extra on a stand to make it sit upright. We doubt those are deal-breakers for anyone, but we thought you should know.

In all, though, the Slim is a big improvement, being cheaper, smaller, quieter and more efficient, with new features that further expand its appeal, both as a gaming and lifestyle device. As well as a killer back catalogue, forthcoming titles include Band Hero, FIFA 10, and Red Dead Redemption. A video store also arrives this year.

So, game over? Well, maybe not, given Microsoft has just slashed the price of an Xbox 360 elite. Even so, in this slimmed down, cut-price guise, Sony's PS3 has never looked more affordable or alluring.

PlayStation Move Charging Station

PlayStation Move Charging Station Review

The Sony PlayStation Move Controller Charger is easy to set up and is a no-frills AC-adapter charger that is dependable. The Move Controller and Nav. Contoller fit just fine in this dock and semi-lock them in place but causes no problems getting them out for use. When your PS3 turns off, despite this having no USB connection, just powers down with your basic off with devices as usual. Having your controllers already in place, even when not in use has your chargers at full, this unit also charges 2 controllers very quickly which is a plus and a load off other UDB devices. Also this is well built, albiet being a simple charger.

I bought this while waiting for a quad-controller I ordered to arrive. But as a 2-controller dock station, it works flawlessly for those who just need, for example to charge 2 Move Controllers (the Nav.controller holds a long charge) and that's it, or in a lesser used room with a PS3 & Move, or as a backup. I still wonder at that Sony with sales of Move not building a quad-dock in the first place. My only con, is the lack of 2 more power ports vs price.

It does the job of recharging your controllers, is stury enough and works flawlessly.

PlayStation Move Charging Station Feature

  • Charges any two PlayStation Move controllers simultaneously
  • Keeps your controllers fully charged organized and ready for action
  • Plugs into any wall outlet or place conveniently in an entertainment center
  • No USB port required
  • Compact design

PlayStation Move Charging Station Overview

The Charging Station conveniently charges and stores two PlayStation Move controllers. Utilizing the charging terminals at the bottom of the motion controller and the navigation controller, the Charging Station allows for incredibly easy charging of both the controllers. It plugs directly into the wall, leaving the USB ports on your PS3 open and your entertainment center tangle-free.

Shutter Speed Basics

Image : http://www.flickr.com

I'm sure you know that one of the most important key elements to getting beautifully clear and artistic photos is firstly knowing and having a sense of the artistic. Next I'll tell you what you need in order to take these skills so you can refine your digital photography. The secret really is, combining your natural artistic flare with some precise technical knowledge...explained in laymen's terms. No baffling or confusion here, ever. So I'm going to start you off with some good, solid tips about shutter speed, aperture, exposure, how blur can work well (not the accidental type!) and what camera you can use to get goods results in your digital photography.

Shutter speed is one of the first things in digital photography that you must know if you want to excel your skills and get beautiful digital photos. Your shutter speed controls the amount of light coming in to the digital sensor. The speed at with you get your light exposure can really make or break your digital photography.

Your shutter speeds are defined or measured as F stops. You will see this written as either "f stop" or hyphenated as "f-stop." Either way it means the same. The shutter speed exposure of your camera is "The speed of the rotation of the shutter inside the lens, measured in rotations per second". Okay, that's very nice but what does that mean in your digital photography?

In basic terms to help you understand, shutter speed controls light exposure. It means that whatever F stop you have your digital camera on will control the amount of light coming in to the camera and make your pictures brighter or darker. Shutter speeds can impact the clarity of a moving object for example. You can create shutter speeds that are fast or shutter speed that gives a freeze on the motion of the object such as a moving car.

For example a good "freeze motion" shot where something looks suspended in time, may be at a shutter speed of 1/2000. That means the shutter has opened and closed so fast that you can't replicate it in sound or description. The shutter has clicked in 2000th of a second. That's how a lot of sports photography is done. Many subjects that move around and when you want to create this effect with can look really good with a fast shutter speed.

Shutter speeds of babies and kids for example have to be taken pretty fast....unless they're asleep of course. You need a pretty high shutter speed of babies and kids because in photographic terms they move around so fast! I've never been more tired after a day of shooting photos of kids and babies. You have to be on your toes because a potentially great photo is gone in an instant of a second, so you have to watch them like a hawk.

On the other hand you can get blurry images using shutter speed effects manipulation. Shutter speeds and blur can work quite nicely together. For example if you want to create that artistic blue look, not the accidental smudge look then some gentle blur in your photos can look beautiful. This involves some adjusting of the shutter speed to get the right look for your shot.

Take for example two different situations. One is of children playing or running. If you wanted to "suspend" the motion then you would perhaps set the shutter speed to an f stop of 1/500 or 1/1000 for example. (What you set the shutter speed at depends on how much light you have to work with.)

The next example is of creating the nice artistic blur. You may take the same photo of the kids running, but set the shutter speed exposure to something around the 1/250 for example. This range of f stops may create a really nice, soft blur with these shutter speed effects.

Shutter speed and aperture in your digital photography must work together closely to create the right blend of effect in your photo. So just try it. Play around with moving objects on different shutter speeds and you'll see what I mean about the different types of effects you can get.

So what digital cameras can you do this with?

Slr's. It's a little hard to do this with an ordinary point-and shoot- digital camera because you can't control the shutter speed independently. On a prosumer camera it's better because you can change the exposure value, but still, you can't change the shutter speed alone. However if you do have one changing the exposure value or "e/v" as we call it is better than nothing. You can still experiment pretty well if you have one of these digital cameras. However a single lens reflex digital camera is the ideal. It allows you to control the shutter speed alone, independently, without affecting the adjustment of the aperture.

To summarise, you can get beautifully artistic shots by having a sense of what works intuitively, then couple that with a good sense of photographic technical knowledge and you are well on your way! So start with playing around with the shutter speeds first and then move on to aperture, then try both. You'll see some pretty interesting stuff I can assure you.

Happy shooting!

Call of Duty 4 - Review

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When I began playing COD 4, I was skeptical due to its lack-luster predecessor. Those doubts were very short-lived. When the game begins, you are given an obstacle course of sorts, like all COD games. Afterwards, you are treated to a training mission that takes place in Tanker. This is what truly made me realize how powerful the Unreal 3 Engine truly is.

The graphics, mechanics, sound effects and just overall feeling sucks you into the game very quickly. Not to ruin the game for anybody, but like all COD games, you play as different soldiers, each from their respective Countries. You start as a S.A.S officer, than as the game progresses, you play as a U.S. Marine Core Officer.

The weapons and different things available in this game are unbelievable. Everything from the M920 to the Javelin truly make it an enjoyable experience. Environment also comes into effect, as exploding cars and what seems at times, an endless barrage of grenades can seem to kill you. Enemies have gone to school and now don't just randomly pop out to get shot at. Lucky for you, your squad is a grade higher. Sometimes just when you think its over, your squad mate will take out the enemy that got you pinned. Needless to say, you start thanking your squad.

What makes a great game even better? Great replay value and this games multi-player adds this without effort. The different modes available provide such a great online experience. There is no one guy that takes out a whole team with a pistol and a melee. Every kill here you work for it, and just as it is a bit easy to kill, being killed is also just as easy. Don't fret though, as the kill cam allows you to see how you got killed. Like all games, you win by getting points, either by killing enemy's, or holding a base, or calling in an air strike. Yes, air strikes, choppers and radar are all gained by consecutive kills. Great little reward system.

How does COD4 compare to the monster that is Halo 3? Simple, they are 2 different games that in ways compliment eachother and use what works. The online community in COD 4 is excellent and people really know what they are doing. Halo has the same thing, but we get treated to the oh so often 11 year old who thinks he is Master Chief and that every kill we "cheated."

Overall, this is one fabulous game that deserves every good score it has received.

Do You Agree With Corey Pavin's Ryder Cup Picks?

Today Captain Corey Pavin choose the 4 remaining members of the US Ryder Cup team. His choices are Zach Johnson, Tiger Woods, Stewart Cink and Rickie Fowler. As I reported in a blog entry August 24th, those in contention for the four spots and my observations of each were:

9th - Anthoney Kim: coming off a hand injury. Missed the cut in PGA Championship, and in the Wyndham this past week.
10th - Lucas Glover: Ryder Cup veteran. Missed the cut by 2 strokes in the PGA, 7th in the Wyndham..
11th - Zach Johnson: 3rd in the PGA. Solid Cup veteran.
12th - Tiger Woods: Having difficulty regaining his No. 1 in the World form. 28th in PGA.
13th - Bo Van Pelt: 28th in PGA. A very dark horse.
14th - Stewart Cink: Has Ryder Cup whiskers, playing well lately, 18th in PGA.
15th - Ben Crane: Consistent the past two years but a dark horse, 39th in PGA.
16th - Ricky Barnes: Missed PGA cut. Maybe next year.
17th - Nick Watney: Dismal showing in PGA eliminated as a choice.
18th - Sean O'Hair: Consistent, a future star next year.
19th - J.B. Holms: Another dark horse, well at least a gray one. 24th in PGA.
20th - Rickie Fowler: 58th in PGA. Probably next year.

Listening to the comments made by the four picks you know the importance the players put on playing for their country. After winning the Deutsche Bank Championship, Charlie Hoffman lobbied hard on national television for the opportunity to represent his country. One could tell by the emotion in his voice and facial expression this was a goal of a lifetime and meant as much or more than the huge win and prize money he had just captured.

My only reservation about picking Rickie Fowler over Lucas Glover was who really deserved the pick? Fowler has been playing exceptionally well as of late and looks to be a rising star but was 20th in points while Glover was 10th and playing well and has Ryder Cup experience. But looking at the statistics for the three I understand why Corey chose Rickie.

Rickey Fowler:

FedEx Reg. Season 19th
Fed. Ex. Playoffs 25th
World Golf Ranking 33rd
Money List 25th

Lucas Glover:

FedEx Reg. Season 47th
Fed. Ex. Playoffs 74th
World Golf Ranking 34rd
Money List 48th

Charlie Hoffman:

FedEx Reg. Season 77th
Fed. Ex. Playoffs 2nd
World Golf Ranking 51st
Money List 27th

One last Ryder Cup note: Almost every prognosticator is picking the European team and I'm not sure why. Their number one player, Lee Westwood may not play or at best be very rusty from his layoff after the Bridgestone Championship August 8th due to an injured calf. Luke Donald faltered this past weekend. Ross Fisher has two Euro wins. Padraig Harrington and Ian Poulter are having sup par seasons. Miguel Angel Jimenez has two Euro wins. Martin Kaymer and Gareme McDowell haven't been heard since winning the PGA and US Open. Rory McIlroy and Edoardo Molinari are hot and will have to play well for Europe to regain the cup.

I'm picking the US in a landslide.

Why Are Nursing Homes Buying the Nintendo Wii For Their Patients?

Image : http://www.flickr.com

One of the many goals of a nursing home is to keep their patients as active as possible. It may not be possible for them to get out as much as they once did but they can still take part in many activities. It may surprise you to find out that many nursing homes are buying the Nintendo Wii for their patients.

This is due to the many interactive games they can play. For example the interactive bowling game allows even those in their wheelchairs to follow through the process of rolling an imaginary ball. Then they watch on the screen as the pins fall down. They can be seen being very competitive with each other and having a great time with the games.

Tennis is another interactive Nintendo Wii game that the older patients really seem to enjoy. Many of them will tell you stories about playing such sports in their youth as well. This can bring back wonderful memories that they may not have thought about for a while. Even if they have never played a real game of tennis in their life they are having a great time playing it now.

There is also golf and fishing which seem to be quite popular with the men at these nursing home facilities. In addition to them working their muscles, hand and eye coordination is continuing to take place. They also have a great time interacting with the staff and with each other. This type of fun and laugher can certainly help them to feel younger inside and out.

The market for the Nintendo Wii is amazing when you consider the range of people it appeals to. They younger generations are certainly interested in the many features and newer games it offers. Even very young children who are just learning about video games are able to enjoy a variety of games. Parents are playing many of the interactive games with their children. They love that everyone isn't just sitting around.

As you can see from some of the examples here, even the elderly are able to enjoy the various Nintendo Wii games. They allow them to regain some of their youth and vibrance. At the same time they get to have some fun on a level that they can relate to. They are even getting some low impact exercise that really makes them feel good.

As the benefits of these games for the elderly continue to be exposed, you can be sure more adult communities are going to start offering them. When you consider that the gaming console and these games can be purchased for less than $500 it is really a very good investment. In fact, some of the residents at these facilities are even asking for such activities to be offered for their entertainment.

Many doctors are even encouraging this type of activity for therapy. Tournaments for various types of games are becoming popular in these nursing homes as well. Even though these individuals are older, their spunk and their competitive nature is still there. They can have great fun trying to do better than their opponents. In the end though there is a lot of support and cheering going on in the background. This type of encouragement is really needed in such an environment.

Latest PS3 Games

Image : http://www.flickr.com

PlayStation games have always been popular but since the introduction of PS3, the competition between PC and PS3 games has reached its peak. The introduction of 3D games has given PS3 a boost and lots of new games are coming that are not available on PC. Alpha Protocol is one of the PS3 games released few weeks before and a lot was expected from it. Surprisingly, the game did not do well and it is clear why. The game lacked story and more importantly, the game play was awkward and things never looked complete in the game.

Tiger Woods may have faced many problems lately in his personal life and the pressure can be seen in his golf as well but his virtual play has done well and is at the top of the list of bestsellers. PGA tour 11 has come out with lots of improvements and players will feel much more involved in this version. You can add fun to it as your picture can be adjusted on the player's face with the help of a digital camera. You will have wide choice of players as more than 20 professional golfers are in this particular version. Tiger Woods will be a choice of everyone but if you want to play this for long time then you should chose custom golfer and track your rating and experience.

Modnation Racers is another interesting game launched on PS3 platform and it will be your favorite for quite some time. The only problem that this version has is that it takes too much time to load. It has been built by using excellent creation tools. You can access full features after playing the tutorial race. You will be able to communicate with players from all over the world within the game which will make it more interesting for you.

How to Shoot Lower Scores

The goal of every golfer at every level is to improve. This is usually defined as a lower score. At first you want to break 100, then 90, then 80 and so on. If you get to the PGA tour you want to win an event, then a major, then more majors. Even Tiger Woods talks about changing his swing and working on shots to keep getting better. Everyone has a different place where they get stuck trying to improve. Here we will talk about strategies to help you shoot lower scores at any level.

Short Game

Shooting lower scores is very much based on your short game proficiency. This includes chipping and putting. Your chipping needs to be good enough that you give yourself tap-ins once or twice a round. The other chips or shots around the green need to leave you within reasonable one putt distance. Whenever, you are faced with a shot around the green make certain that your next shot is a putt.If you are buried in a bunker just get it on the green and give yourself a putt. You don't need to hit the hero shot. Playing shots that you know you can hit are the surest way to shoot lower scores. Groove your putting stroke so that you know where the ball is going to start. One of the best putting drills is to use 6 balls. Find a flat straight putt on your practice green. Place the first ball right on the lip of the cup, the next one is a foot behind that and so on so that the last ball is about 6 feet from the cup. Then start stroking each ball into the cup. The first few putts should be easy because the balls are so close to the hole. This will breed the confidence that the ball is going to go in the cup. Also, as you move back you realize that the next putt is just one foot longer. All you have to do is roll the ball straight for 12 inches. By the time you get to 6 feet this will seem like a simple putt. A solid repeating putting stroke is the surest way to shoot lower scores. The goal is to average less than 30 putts per round. This will absolutely help you shoot lower scores.

Long Game

Thinking about swing mechanics never leads to lower scores. When you are really trying to play for a best score you have to focus on scoring and not mechanics. This is where the expression "paralysis by analysis" comes from. So trust yourself and your swing.Don't go chasing a bunch of different swing theories and methods. Stick with what you've got. Hopefully, you have a certain shot that you play most of the time. You may always hit the ball left to right or right to left. Play your bread and butter shot as often as you can. This will make the game easier and is another sure fire way to shoot lower scores. If you can play a fade on a dogleg left, then do it. Work on your tempo and rhythm. Watch the pros. They always seem to swing the same way. Some swing fast and hard others are smoother and slow. Whatever your tendency is make sure you stay with it. Try to play all tee -to- green shots with the same rhythm. This will keep you from thinking about mechanics and focus more on getting the ball from point A to point B which is what shooting lower scores is all about. Finally if you want to have lower scores then play more golf! This is going to be counter to what many instructors tell you. They want you to practice, practice, and practice. While practice certainly has its place it does not necessarily lead to shooting lower scores. You have to get out and play more because on the course is where you really learn to shoot lower scores. Just make certain you keep track of your rounds and what you are doing. It's important that you know what you need to do to post lower scores.

Many golfers get stuck and frustrated at a certain scoring level. They can't seem to break through to the next level.

Camera Shake and Image Stabilization (Vibration Reduction)

Image : http://www.flickr.com

When you are first buying camera equipment you see a lot of lenses that have the IS or VR designations on them. This is Image Stabilization or Vibration Reduction. They mean the same thing except Canon uses the first term and Nikon uses the second. These are mechanisms built into the camera lens to prevent "camera shake". I will discuss how to get rid of camera shake and why I purchased a VR lens for myself.

What is Camera Shake?

When you are holding your camera in your hands and looking through the view finder to take your photo, your body is making slight movements. This is a natural thing as your body is always correcting itself and your muscles move to help maintain your balance. However, it causes slight movements in your camera. When your camera is zoomed in on a subject that is a reasonable distance away, these slight movements become more noticeable.

For example. If your hand slightly shakes and turns your camera 1 degree off its line of direction and your subject is 15 feet away, this would correspond to 3.1 inches being added in the direction your camera turned. Now say that the movement of your hand happened when you took your picture and while the shutter was open. This would blur the image on film or on your digital image.

How Do I Prevent My Pictures From Blurring?

There are 3 ways to prevent this.

Make sure you have a shutter speed fast enough so that your hand movements don't affect the picture.
Use a tripod.
Have a lens with vibration reduction or image stabilization.

Each of these methods have their pros and cons.1. Have a Fast Enough Shutter Speed

Ideally, you would want this situation every time. The rule of thumb is that you need a shutter speed of 1 over the focal length your lens is set at. So if you are zoomed all the way in with your 300mm lens, you would want 1/300 second shutter speed or better (so 1/320 on the standard camera). This will usually guarantee (for the average user) the shutter won't be open long enough to make your hand movements noticeable on the final image If you have steady hands you will be able to get away with a slower speed. The catch here is will you have enough light to expose your picture. If it is the middle of a bright day you are fine. If it is darker you might have to use a more sensitive film, but this will cause your picture to be grainier.

Note: When you see expensive lenses with the same zoom capability as a cheaper lens, look at the maximum aperture for this lens. Chances are it will be a lot larger than the cheaper one. F/2.8 is a common one. The lower the number, the larger the aperture can go. This means a lot more light will get let in when you take the picture, so it will be able to have higher shutter speeds.

2. Use a Tri-pod

This will always work. Now you can have the shutter open as long as your want and the image won't have any blurring (this is assuming your subject isn't moving or is moving slowly). Tripods are cumbersome and annoying however. And they definitely don't work in a lot of circumstances, especially traveling.

3. Use a Lens With Image Stabilization or Vibration Reduction

This is "meet in the middle" approach as you still need a decent shutter speed, but you won't need a tripod and its cheaper than a fast lens. Inside the camera there is a mechanism to adjust the glass lenses slightly to compensate for the movements of your hand. IS and VR will give you a few shutter speed stops back. So if you can't quite get enough light to have 1/320 sec shutter speed as in the example above. VR will let you go down to 1/125 sec (4 full stops in ideal situations). A lot of times, this will give you enough light to properly expose your image. VR and IS will make a lens cost extra, but they are still cheaper than buying the fast lenses I spoke of above. Fast lenses don't usually have much zoom capability either (a limitation of having such a large aperture).

The main article has an example of two images. One was taken without VR turned on and the other had VR on. This is a picture in my home taken with my Nikon D70s with the Nikon 18-200mm VR lens.

To summarize. The cheapest solution is to buy a tripod, the second is to buy a lens with IS or VR, and the most expensive is to buy "fast" lenses. I am a casual photographer and use it more for traveling so VR has been the best option for myself. If you find yourself with similar needs and want to eliminate camera shake from more of your photos, then I would definitely recommend looking at VR and IS lenses.
